Step-by-Step Direaction to make Tricolour Idli recipe on Republic Day
Step 1: Prepare the Colours
Start by dividing your plain idli batter into three portions. Keep one portion plain for the white band.
For the saffron/orange: Mix the tomato puree or grated carrot into one portion. The tomato gives a lovely orange-red hue, while carrot adds sweetness and nutrition. Add that tiny pinch of turmeric if you want a brighter colour.
For the green: Blend a handful of spinach or coriander with a little water to make a smooth paste. Fold this into the third batter portion until you get a vibrant green.
Step 2: Layer with Love
Lightly grease the idli moulds. Now, think of the Indian flag from the bottom up: Saffron on top, White in the middle, Green at the bottom. But for our idli, we pour in reverse!
First, pour a spoonful of green batter to fill the bottom third of each mould. Gently tap the plate to level it.
Next, carefully pour the white batter over the back of a spoon onto the green layer to fill the middle third. This prevents the colours from mixing.
Finally, top it off with the orange batter to fill the remaining third.
Step 3: Steam to Perfection
Place the filled idli stand in a pre-heated steamer. Steam for about 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let them cool for a minute.
Step 4: Pack for Pride
Once slightly warm, gently remove the beautiful tri-coloured idlis. Pack 2-3 in their tiffin box with a side of coconut chutney or a simple tomato ketchup for dipping. You can even add a tiny edible flag pick on top!
This Republic Day, this tiffin does more than fill a hungry tummy. It tells a story of unity, diversity, and delicious joy. It’s a simple, heartfelt way to say, “Happy Republic Day!”
